About

TheEssay is an independent consultancy based in New York, working across merchandising, buying, brand and retail strategy, and activations. We partner with founders, creative directors, and leadership teams on the decisions that shape a season, a collection, and a stage of growth.

Founded by Lindsay Chang, the practice draws on over a decade of experience across luxury retail and fashion. Prior to establishing TheEssay, Lindsay was Head Buyer at Rick Owens and La Garçonne, and Director at Atelier New York. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design.

02.
Approach
How we work

An essay is, by definition, a short, structured piece of prose writing that presents an author's personal argument, analysis, or interpretation of a specific subject. Derived from the French essayer — to try — it functions as an attempt to explore ideas.

We like to work like editors. Editing, shaping, refining, and consolidating ideas into decisions that can actually move a business forward.

We advise brands and founders navigating periods of growth, transition, or strategic change. Most engagements begin when existing decision-making frameworks are no longer sufficient for the scale or complexity of the business.

Summary
Effective 01.06.2026

TheEssay LLC is a small independent consultancy based in New York. We collect limited information in order to correspond with you, understand potential engagements, improve the site, and operate the practice. We do not sell personal data. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect and why.

02.
What we collect

Information you provide. Your name, email, organization, and message contents when you write to us or fill in the contact form.

Information collected automatically. When you visit the site, our hosting provider may record standard server-log information such as the page requested, referrer, browser, device type, and approximate location derived from IP address, used for security, diagnostics, and site performance. We also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. It sets cookies on your device and sends usage data — such as pages viewed, referring sources, approximate location, and device and browser information — to Google, which we review in aggregate.

03.
How we use it

We use what you send us to reply, discuss a potential engagement, and — once we are working together — deliver the work. We use Google Analytics to understand site use in aggregate, such as how many people visit, which pages they read, and where they arrive from.

We do not sell your personal data. Data collected by Google Analytics is processed by Google under its own terms and privacy policy. We do not provide your information to third parties for the purpose of training their AI models. Where we use service providers (such as email, CRM, analytics, or other operational tools) that may incorporate AI features, we select providers whose terms prohibit using customer data to train their models without consent, and we configure these tools accordingly.

04.
Legal basis (EU/UK)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we process your personal data under the following lawful bases:

  • Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), for responding to your inquiries, corresponding about potential engagements, operating and improving the website, and maintaining records of our business relationships. We balance this against your rights and expectations as a professional contact.
  • Performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR), once we are formally engaged to deliver work.
  • Legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c) GDPR), where we are required to retain or disclose information by applicable law.
  • Consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), where we explicitly ask for it — for example, if we ever introduce a mailing list or similar optional communications. You may withdraw consent at any time.
05.
Sharing

We share information only with the service providers that allow the practice and website to operate, including email, hosting, form-handling, security, and site infrastructure providers, and Google, which provides our analytics. Usage data collected by Google Analytics is shared with Google and processed under its terms. We do not sell your information to data brokers. We may disclose information where required by law.

06.
Cookies & retention

This site uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies on your device (for example, _ga) to measure site use. These are analytics cookies, not advertising cookies. The site also uses a single browser-storage entry (in localStorage) to remember your preferred display language between visits; this entry stays on your device, is not transmitted to us, and is not used for tracking. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings, or install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on to stop Google Analytics from collecting your data. Where local law requires prior consent for analytics cookies, you can withhold it by blocking cookies before browsing the site.

Correspondence is retained as long as reasonably needed for the engagement, our records, and legitimate business purposes, and may be deleted on request where applicable. Analytics data is reviewed in aggregate; Google retains the data it collects according to its own retention policies.

07.
Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict our processing of your personal data, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. To exercise any of these, write to theessayllc@gmail.com and we will aim to respond within a reasonable timeframe.

You also have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interest. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

01.
Commitment
WCAG 2.2 AA targeted

TheEssay is committed to building a website usable by everyone, regardless of ability, device, or assistive technology. Accessibility is a discipline of editing — clear hierarchy, sufficient contrast, generous targets, prose that can be read by ear as well as by eye. We treat it the same way we treat the rest of the work.

02.
Standards

This site is designed and maintained with reference to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. Conformance is targeted across public pages.

03.
Features
  • Semantic HTML with descriptive headings and ARIA landmarks (cover region, primary navigation, main content).
  • A skip link at the top of every page lets keyboard users move past the navigation directly to the main content.
  • Text contrast meets or exceeds WCAG AA across body and UI text. Form-field borders and other non-text UI elements meet the 3:1 contrast requirement.
  • Fully responsive; reflows to a single column on narrow screens with no loss of content.
  • All interactive elements reachable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline in the brand colour shown for keyboard navigation.
  • Form fields paired with explicit labels; required fields are both programmatically marked and visually indicated, with autocomplete hints supplied where applicable.
  • Tap and click targets across primary controls (the language picker, form controls, and call-to-action links) meet the WCAG 2.2 Target Size (Minimum) of 24 by 24 CSS pixels. Inline text links and tightly-spaced list items follow the exception in 2.5.8 (text and inline targets), with generous line height around them.
  • The document language attribute updates to match the active interface language, so screen readers use the correct pronunciation.
  • Transitions and animations across the site respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query.
  • No content depends on colour alone to convey meaning.
  • Pages usable at 200% browser zoom without horizontal scrolling on standard viewports.
04.
Known limitations

We work continuously to identify and resolve accessibility issues. At present we are aware of the following: the wordmark sets the word The in a display-serif italic, paired with an upright Essay; both render in the brand blue on the off-white background, which meets WCAG AA contrast, but italic display type at small sizes may read more slowly for some users. Third-party platforms we link to are outside our control and may have their own accessibility characteristics.

05.
Feedback & alternatives

If something on this site is difficult to use or broken with your assistive technology, write to theessayllc@gmail.com with a short description of the issue, the page involved, and your browser or assistive technology. We aim to acknowledge within five working days. If any content is unavailable in a format that works for you, we will provide it in another format — plain-text, large-print, or read aloud over a call — at no cost.
